The elevator that they’ve built has been close for a very long time & they never have any solid estimated time of fixing it - so don’t expect it.
Climbers: drop your gear and people at the parking lot, park down the hill, and hitchhike back up or walk, about 15-20 minutes. The walk is not particularly safe as there are no foot paths, but the local drivers are pretty conservative.
Try to bring a backpack instead of a purse or any other bag. It’s much easier to climb stairs with your hands free.
I came here to climb rocks and was not disappointed. The port-o-potties and recycle bins do their jobs, but the parking situation is pretty atrocious. If they get that worked out and detail the signs a bit better, this will be five stars.
There are several trash can locations during the walk so please don’t leave your drinks or snacks anywhere along the trails.
I would highly recommend arriving as early in the day as possible so that you aren’t rushed trying to get down the mountain before dark. Bring a jacket during the colder months of the year cuz it gets colder quickly.
Where to begin about Chimney Rock State Park?! As a local it is a blessing to have this opportunity to be able to visit anytime we would like! The amazing trails are focused for all ages depending on which Trail you take! My absolute favorite would definitely be the Hickory Nut Falls Trail which takes you to the base of the 404 foot waterfall! The park offers several activities throughout the year ,several guided walks, a wonderful animal area, small gift shops, a little Deli and phenomenal views!
There are several trails to walk through to see a variety of things(waterfalls, rock formations, even a small cave).
You can purchase water & Gatorade both in the gift shop(before the stairway begins) and at the top of the climb at a little snack shack. The snack shack even accept credit cards. The drinks are about $2.50/each.
The park is always wonderfully beautiful, the trails are always an adventure with birds chirping and other forest critters, great for families, super friendly staff, places to cookout, picnic tables and benches placed around the park. If you can make it to the tops of the highest trails its breath taking! The waterfall is a must see. Four seasons trail is my personal favorite.
The cost is $13/person. Children 4yrs & younger are free. 5yrs & older kids are discounted rates. They accept cash & cards.
You will see people with all types of dogs because the park allows pets on leashes.
Beautiful park. Went in the winter time and although it was chilly, it was a great place to walk around. The views are incredible. The stairs were built in such a way that they don't interfere too much with the beautiful landscape - there are even portions of the climb up where you can walk between and even UNDER large rock formations. Plenty of places to stop if you get a little winded, and definitely a dog-friendly park; we saw many doggos running around.
There are restrooms at the 1st parking lot & at the entrance to the stairway.
There are 500 steps from the bottom level to the top of chimney rock. Which means there is also 500 steps going back down. They have built in rest areas for people to take breaks as you walk up the long stairs.
